The history of the Wellington area is deeply rooted, tracing back to prehistoric times when it was home to the Khoekhoe and San peoples. In the late 1600s, Dutch and Huguenot settlers arrived, initially calling it Limietvallei. Later, the French renamed it Val du Charron (Valley of the Wagonmakers), acknowledging the wagon-making industry. 

Established in 1840 on a Huguenot farm called Champagne, the town was later named Wellington by the British in honour of the Duke of Wellington following his victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
